Buckingham Browne & Nichols School Woodshop Addition – Cambridge, MA
Located at the center of Buckingham Browne & Nichols’ upper school campus, the historic Sloyd Building has supported hands-on learning since 1932. A new addition extends that tradition of making, creating a permanent home for the school’s growing robotics program as well as engineering classes. To better serve the school at large, the expanded facility includes amenities and support spaces for adjacent playing fields.
Enhancing the school's STEAM curriculum is an integral part of the Buckingham Browne & Nichols strategic plan. The Sloyd Building addition includes classroom and fabrication spaces, along with a high-bay area where students can assemble and test large-scale projects. The fabrication space opens directly onto the athletic fields, providing room for teams to move their work outdoors.

Modest in scale, the addition adopts the low roofline and Arts and Crafts character of the original woodshop without attempting to replicate it. The project preserves the identity of one of the campus’s earliest buildings while adapting it for a new generation of experimentation.
