Room to Experiment
Science Labs – Cambridge, MA
For two historic school campuses in Cambridge, Evergreen Architecture transformed existing buildings into environments where curiosity thrives. At both Buckingham Browne & Nichols and the International School of Boston, the goal was simple yet profound: to create spaces that teach as much as they serve, where science feels hands-on, personal, and inspiring.

At Buckingham Browne & Nichols Upper School, a series of underused areas were reimagined into modern science labs and classrooms. Each renovation was a project-based collaboration with faculty and administrators, ensuring that every square foot supports experimentation, discussion, and discovery. Light-filled teaching zones, integrated prep areas, and writable surfaces throughout encourage both structured lessons and spontaneous inquiry.
At the International School of Boston, Evergreen converted a formerly underutilized portion of a historic masonry building into a much-needed upper school science lab. The design preserves the character of the original structure while weaving in contemporary functionality—state-of-the-art lab equipment, flexible furnishings, and improved circulation. The result is a space that bridges eras and pedagogies: a 19th-century structure re-tuned for 21st-century learning.
